It may seem crazy to talk about childproofing for a newborn, but here are five things you can do even before the baby is born. Then, continue to assess and identify potential hazards as your baby grows. See the end of this post for a great resource about keeping your baby and toddlers safe at all ages and stages.
#1 Make sure all your equipment, including crib, car seat, and stroller meet U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. This is especially important if you are using any hand-me-down or borrowed items.
#2 Move all breakables and cords from the area near the crib, changing table, and bathing area, including any monitors and their cords.
#3 Place gates in doorways to keep pets out of the baby’s sleep area.
#4 Remove bumpers, pillows, and large stuffed animals from your baby’s sleeping area. All cribs, cradles, and bassinets should be cleared of anything except a fitted sheet.
#5 Install smoke detectors and plan fire escape routes.
And as your baby grows and begins to move more, here is a great resource from Childproofing Experts.
