Afterpains - Uterine Cramping after Giving Birth

Once you have delivered your baby, your attention shifts to primarily getting to know and taking care of your newborn.

But, you will need to take care of your own body, too, as it recovers from pregnancy and delivery. Today, let’s talk a bit about afterpains, including, what they are, how long they will last, and how to manage them.

During the first few days after delivery, you might experience afterpains. They are actually contractions that feel like menstrual cramps. These contractions compress the blood vessels in the uterus, which prevents too much bleeding as your uterus returns to normal size over about six weeks. Usually the pain will only last a few days.

If you are breastfeeding, you will most likely experience afterpains while you are nursing because it triggers the release of the hormone oxytocin, which aids in shrinking the uterus.

Not all women experience afterpains and those who do have afterpains have varying degrees of intensity and duration. You are more likely to have afterpains if you have had a baby before.

Find Relief

It is important to seek relief from afterpains so you can continue to care for yourself and your baby. Here are some options:

  • Take over-the-counter medicines like ibuprofen or acetaminophen to ease the pain. These are safe to take while nursing.

  • Use a heating pad or hot water bottle on your lower abdomen.

  • Try a compression garment, like a postpartum girdle or a belly band.
