All About Weaning Your Baby

Just like your decision of how to feed your baby was both informed and personal, when to wean is also personal. You must decide when to wean and how to wean, considering what is best for you, your baby, and your family.

The Emotions

When it comes to weaning, emotions span the continuum. Some mother’s feel ready to wean while others feel very sad about the season of breastfeeding coming to an end. Some mothers may feel pressured to wean because they are returning to work or someone thinks they have been doing it “long enough.” Sometimes babies are reluctant to stop and other babies quit nursing abruptly.

No matter your circumstances or what you may feel, know that your feelings are valid and important.

How to wean gradually

Sometimes, as mentioned above, a baby will stop nursing abruptly. Otherwise, it is best to wean gradually. Here are some steps to consider:

  • Watch for signs that your baby is less interested in nursing, especially as they begin to eat more solid foods.

  • Start by replacing one nursing session a day with a bottle or cup. Remember, if your baby is less than 1 year old, she will need formula. If your baby is over 1 year old, you can start on milk. Then, replace another nursing time with a bottle. Then another—until your baby is completely weaned.

  • If your baby seems reluctant and it is possible to slow down the weaning process, consider doing so. You might see signs like tantrums or fussiness if your baby is having a hard time with the pace of weaning.

  • Consider having someone besides mom offer the baby a bottle. Similarly, pick a spot different from where you usually nurse to give the baby a bottle. This will shake up the nursing routine a bit and may help your baby accept the bottle (or cup) quicker.

  • Some people use the “don’t offer, not refuse” method where they don’t offer to nurse but they also don’t refuse if their child wants to nurse.
