What You Need to Know about Sex and Pregnancy

Many people have questions about sex during pregnancy: is it safe and does it change?

Having sex while pregnant is not dangerous for the baby as the baby is protected by amniotic fluid in the womb. So, unless there is a problem with the placenta or heavy bleeding, having sex during pregnancy is safe. Your medical provider will let you know if you should avoid intercourse based on any issues you are having during your pregnancy.

Many women experience changes in libido—an increase or decrease—that can fluctuate throughout pregnancy. Often, the increased blood flow, especially in the second trimester, increases libido.

Similarly, there may be times in pregnancy when sex is difficult or unappealing.  Changes in your body can make having sex, especially in certain positions, different than before. This may be a time to try different positions, especially ones that lower the pressure on your belly. Remember there are other ways to be physically intimate like cuddling or massage.

Perhaps the most important thing is to communicate with your partner about how you are feeling emotionally and physically. If you haven’t been in the habit of talking about sex, this is a good time to become more comfortable with these kinds of intimate conversations.
